Description/Job Summary

The Product Manager provides strategic marketing leadership for assigned products based on customer insights, market analysis, and regular competitive review.  The product manager should be intimate with the P&L of the product lines and their applications/usage, and identify areas for revenue growth and profit improvement in line with the organization’s long term strategies.



Responsibilities/Duties

  • Maintain an up to date business plan for the product line including financial expectations, pricing strategies, competitive position, key opportunities, customer focus and project priorities.  Develop annual product line strategy to support LRP and budgeting. 
  • Provide regular reports on global product line performance. Include Product line financial contribution, major market activity and key project and innovation updates.
  • Provide pricing management and guidelines to all selling entities.  Understand competitive position and value pricing models to ensure market understands the relative value of our products and collaborate on system pricing when appropriate.
  • Identify and prioritize opportunities for new products and business models.  Facilitate Idea generation through market research and field sales and customer outreach.  Define priorities and coordinate activities through commercialization
  • Work with engineering and legal to ensure IP is protected where relevant
  • Work with operations to contribute to Value engineering (VA/VE) projects Utilize market research to understand competitive cost positions.
  • New Product Stewardship through the StageGate process.
  • Support ongoing product line positioning including marketing communication planning, packaging, sales training, customer value presentations, and other materials as needed.
  • Foster an environment of teamwork; emphasizes the importance of internal collaboration to meet and exceed customers’ expectations


  • Areas of Product Management Responsibility Specific to this Role:
  • Steel strapping products targeting various industries / applications shipped via rail, intermodal, container, and OTR methods
  • Strap products used in Metals applications including those internally manufactured and purchased.
  • Support for non-US business expansion into metals applications.
  • Understand internal conversion capabilities and industrial transportation requirements
  • Work with all Steel mfg. facilities to manage reginal and global insourcing strategies.



Required Skills

Strong computer skills with especially strong proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word



Required Experience

  • 5-10 years of product management experience, preferably with an industrial business with similar customer base.
  • Proven background in developing product line strategies and leading product portfolio management
  • Experience with innovation projects, driving from market analysis and guiding priorities and customer requirements definitions
  • Familiarity with processes that will drive margin optimization including pricing strategy, VA/VE, PLS, etc.
  • Strong collaboration skills, able to lead without authority and develop alignment with different functional teams.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build credibility and confidence with a wide variety of leaders including internal stakeholders, customers and partners and be seen as a trusted advisor
  • Well-developed analytical skills; creative decision maker with strong problem-solving skills
  • Fosters an environment of teamwork; emphasizes the importance of internal collaboration to meet and exceed customers’ expectations
  • Ability to work within a matrixed structure and is able to get results in a cross functional environment.
  • Sense of urgency; a bias for action; focus on and responsibility for achieving results
  • Domestic travel and international travel will be required. Up to 25%



Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required (engineering, marketing, or business a plus); master’s degree in marketing or business strongly preferred
