Description/Job Summary

Well qualified and experienced material professional to expand Signode’s line of consumable transit packaging material.  Ability to identify material technology to invest R&D resources, individual should be a creative self-starter.  Ideal candidate will have extensive plastic knowledge and ability to generate R&D activity.  Understanding of all phases of consumable material generation from concept to manufacturing.  Ability to work on multiple projects with various departments, be subject matter expert; training and guiding other personnel.


  • Explore innovative materials and manufacturing processes to generate new consumables for Signode’s catalog, working to build our intellectual property portfolio.
  • Ability to identify and document technical requirements relating to material parameters, using this information to support the stage gate process.
  • Work with Project Engineers ensuring design for manufacturability on new materials and processes
  • Collaborative mindset working to ensure new consumable materials work with Signode’s current/legacy equipment or guiding for design of new equipment or retrofits.
  • Working with program manager to ensure projects stay on task, on time, and accurately documented
  • Mentor and support IRD group for consumable material knowledge.
  • Ability to create and manage university/institutional relationships for new product development and new material testing.  
  • Lead relationships with industry standards committees relating to material.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and machine design.  This role will not have direct responsibility of manufacturing processes or machine design, but an understanding will be necessarily for successful product launch.
  • Creative self-starter, ability to generate innovation.
  • Travel requirement 5-10% during production initiation, material testing, and institutional visits.
  • Other Tasks as assigned.

Preferred Skills

  • Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
    • Working Knowledge of CAD and ECO process

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) or Higher (Master’s Degree preferred) in Material, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with specialization in material

Required Qualifications

  • 6-10 years of relatable industry experience in material design
