Description/Job Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for automation projects that will span initial customer concept through completion, testing and commissioning.  Projects will include equipment development, implementation, and commissioning of Signode’s products, as well as related packaging support equipment such as conveying, robots and other application needs.

Good communication is essential as this position will interact with many cross-functional team members.  This is a very hands-on role, involving all phases of design, building, prototype, field testing and personnel training. 



Responsibilities/Duties

  • Collaborate with our proposal application engineering team by providing automation concepts
  • Prepare 3D engineering models/concepts, 2D drawings and layouts for customer projects
  • Explore innovative manufacturing methods to help reduce mechanical assembly costs and lead time
  • Lead and support team collaboration to accomplish project goals, milestones, and delivery projects on time. 
  • Be able to mentor and support developing engineers and interns
  • Breakdown projects into meaningful milestones and execute projects to schedule 
  • Troubleshoot problems during development, fabrication, assembly, commissioning, and installation of automation line
  • Support the programming and troubleshooting of the robotic and automation equipment
  • Document project with comprehensive reports, maintain accurate documentation, designs, drawings, and processes
  • Provides support for existing product lines in design activities and modification activities for production
  • Coordinate and participate in equipment Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT)
  • Able to deal with emergency or urgent situations on an “as needed” basis as they arise, including those issues arising outside of regular business hours
  • Maintain, promote, and always enhance a safe work environment
  • Maintains and updates all Job Safety Analysis (JSA) when required



Required Experience

  • Engineering applications and automation background 
  • Minimum 6-10 years of applicable work experience in engineering, with a high degree of mechanical aptitude, experienced in designing automated electro-mechanical machinery
  • Experience with manufacturing methods and processes
  • Project lead experience a plus
  • Good mechanical aptitude with a hands-on approach using basic hand tools.
  • Assembly, disassembly, modification and testing of equipment
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks / projects, establish appropriate priorities
  • The ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, challenging, and dynamic environment
  • Detail oriented self-driven individual looking for new challenges and ask questions when needed
  • Ability to read, understand and work from oral and written instructions, mechanical drawings, or sketches.  The ability to read electrical and pneumatic drawings a plus.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry
  • Ability to use measurement instruments, hardness tester, gauge pins, and optical comparator 
  • Able to interpret, understand and follow federal, state and local codes and statutes



Required Education

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or appropriate work history
