Job Description


The Lead Electrical Engineer manages electrical controls and programming for strapping machines and other packaging equipment in accordance with the defined standards including control documentation. This position supports the sales team with feasibility requests, specifications, and cost calculations and collaborates in development projects to ensure the application of new technology, processes and toolsworks. This position reports to the Head of Design & Engineering for Global Metals Equipment, located in Germany, with scheduling priorities assigned by the Metals Project Manager, located in Glenview. 


Handling of customer projects in compliance with the project specifications, material standards, defined signal exchanges and adherence to safety (performance level) and standards 

Creating electrical diagrams and the corresponding BOMs 

Programming of controllers and control panels in accordance with project documentation and defined processes 

Development of software modules which can be adapted and used on different machine types 

Commissioning of the completed machines in cooperation with the assembly team at the machine manufacturer or on-site at the customer 

Controlling the updating of project documentation to ensure "as built" documentation 

Provide an optimization and trouble-shooting service to customers as required 

Support of sales for feasibility investigations, and technical support at all stages of the project life cycle. 

Realization of specific customer requirements 

Cost calculation management for special solutions 

Development of the control program and drive technology in terms of standardization, innovation and cost reduction 

Work closely with colleagues to ensure that best solutions are offered to the market and assist our international electrical design group to make sure our solutions meet US and Canadian regulations. 

Where necessary, work with and manage electrical contractors. 

Introduce and implement their own ideas and expertise in the field of control and drive technology and sharing of best practice with colleagues. 

Balance cost optimization with technical solution. 

Compliance with time and cost for project 

Customize PLC programming to customer specifications, using various computer programs including Rockwell and Siemens software 

Adapt HMI screens to interface with the main/remote control system 

Assist in the training and development of customer electronic technicians and other electrical engineers.

Basic Qualifications: 

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited institution 

Minimum 5 years of control programming experience (Allen Bradley required, Siemens S7 preferred, EPLAN P 8 or similar a plus) in plant engineering and commissioning 

Excellent communication skills, verbal and written 

Must have a customer service focus 

Must be a team player with a global outlook 

Must have a flexible attitude with an aptitude for problem-solving 

Must be a self-starter and be able to make decisions and work independently 

Ability to work with the multiple projects, with some running more than 12 months. 

Willingness to learn new skills 

Strong knowledge of state and national codes and their applications 

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship 

Travel up to 50%, roughly 10% of which will be international travel (mainly Canada and India) 

Computer skills: 

Proficiency in MS Office suite required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
